When the Friendly Psychics Music home recording collective started in the
tiny apartment of Chris Jones and Dan Miller in 1999, neither thought it
would last very long. Nor did they think it would yield this many quality
releases, or collect the talents of so many far-flung musicians and friends
(including John W., Charlie Meyer, Tim Donovan, Michael Behrenahusen, Ken
Clark and many more).
But due to the volume of releases from FPM’s bands, the label’s
co-founders decided to break up their best-of compilations into two volumes:
the first five years, and the most recent five years.
And lucky for you,
they’re both available right here.
Volume 1 gathers 19 tracks from a dozen of the label's best albums, including
every genre and time period in FPM’s history – from the crisp,
acoustic-driven songs of Upstate to the melodic, lo-fi squall of Dishwater
Psychics and the creepy, brain-damaged missives of Bullet Gastino.
Volume 2 goes a step further, drawing from the solo material of the label’s
co-founders.
There’s Derecho, Dan Miller’s poppy and occasionally
rockin’ debut that owes as much to
the Beatles as it does ELO, and
A Surplus of 1, the experimental synth-driven work of longtime bassist Chris
Jones. But there’s also the best of the reunited Circuit Riders, the
tongue-twisting ‘90s indie-folk band, and Brainswarm and Unified Alarm
System, which puts new member
Tim Donovan’s vocals front and center.
In other words, if you want a coherent and focused introduction to the 25-armed
monster that is Friendly Psychics Music, our compilation volumes are the
ideal place to start.
